• Flight Patterns – Moths often have an erratic and fluttery flight pattern, in opposite to the more graceful and direct flight of butterflies.
• Body Structure – Moths typically have stout and hairy bodies. Their bodies may look less slender compared to butterflies.
• Camouflage – Lots of moth species are well camouflaged, which helps them blend into their surroundings. This adaptation aids in avoiding predators during the day while they are at rest.
• Life Cycle – Moths undergo a complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis or cocoon), and adult. The larval stage is usually the feeding stage, where the caterpillar consumes food before pupating.
• Feeding Habits – Moths have a wide variety of feeding behaviour. Some moths feed on nectar, just like butterflies, while others don’t feed at all as adults, focusing on reproduction during their short-tem adult lifespan.
• Diversity – There is an incredible diversity of moth species, with a wide range of colours, sizes and patterns. Some are brightly coloured, and others have more muted tones to aid with camouflage.

It’s important to note that while there are typical characteristics shared by moths, there is a wide variation among the many species, each adapted to its own ecological niche and lifestyle.
