• Antennae – Moths typically have feathery or filamentous antennae. The antenna shape can vary among different moth species.
• Nocturnal Behaviour – most moths are nocturnal, meaning they are active primarily during the night. However, some species are diurnal (active during the day).
• Resting Position – While at rest, moths typically hold their wings flat or wrap them around their bodies, making them different from butterflies which often hold their wings in an upright position.
• Flight Patterns – Moths regularly have an erratic and fluttery flight pattern, in opposite to the more graceful and direct flight of butterflies.
• Body Structure – Moths usually have stout and hairy bodies. Their bodies may look less slender compared with butterflies.
• Camouflage – Many moth species are very well camouflaged, which helps them blend into their surroundings. This adaptation aids in avoiding predators during the day while they are at rest.
• Life Cycle – Moths undergo a complete metamorphosis, consisting of 4 stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis or cocoon), and adult. The larval stage is usually the feeding stage, where the caterpillar consumes food before pupating.
• Feeding Habits – Moths have a wide range of feeding behaviour. Some moths feed on nectar, just like butterflies, while others do not feed at all as adults, focusing on reproduction during their short adult lifespan.
• Diversity – There is a wide diversity of moth species, with a wide range of sizes, colours, and patterns. Some are brightly coloured, while others have more subtle tones for camouflage.

It’s important to note that while there are typical characteristics shared by moths, there is a wide variation among the many species, each adapted to its specific ecological niche and lifestyle.
