• Resting Position – When at rest, moths usually hold their wings flat or wrap them around their bodies, making them different from butterflies that often hold their wings in an upright position.
• Flight Patterns – Moths regularly have a fluttery and erratic flight pattern, in contrast to the more direct and graceful flight of butterflies.
• Body Structure – Moths usually have stout and hairy bodies. Moth bodies may look less slender compared with butterflies.
• Camouflage – Many moth species are very well camouflaged, which helps them blend into their surroundings. This adaptation aids in avoiding predators during the day while they are at rest.
• Life Cycle – Moths undergo a complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis or cocoon), and adult. The larval stage is usually the feeding stage, where the caterpillar consumes food before pupating.
• Feeding Habits – Moths exhibit a wide range of feeding behaviour. Some moths feed on nectar, similar to butterflies, while others do not feed at all as adults, focusing on reproduction during their short adult lifespan.
• Diversity – There is an incredible diversity of moth species, with a wide variety of sizes, colours, and patterns. Some are brightly coloured, and others have more muted tones to aid with camouflage.

It’s important to know that while there are typical characteristics shared by moths, there is considerable variation among the many species, each adapted to its specific ecological niche and lifestyle.
