• Body Structure – Moths typically have stout and hairy bodies. Moth bodies may look less slender compared with butterflies.
• Camouflage – Many moth species are very well camouflaged, helping them blend into their surroundings. This adaptation aids in avoiding predators during the day while they are at rest.
• Life Cycle – Moths undergo a complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis or cocoon), and adult. The larval stage is normally the feeding stage, where the caterpillar consumes food before pupating.
• Feeding Habits – Moths have a wide range of feeding habits. Some moths feed on nectar, similar to butterflies, while others don’t feed at all as adults, focusing on reproduction during their short adult lifespan.
• Diversity – There is an incredible diversity of moth species, with a wide range of colours, sizes and patterns. Some are brightly coloured, and others have more muted tones to aid with camouflage.
