The Problem / The Challenge:
It was the first week of Autumn, Mr P the manager of a bathroom specialist shop based in Islington decided to task the staff with clearing the old stock from basement storeroom. Whilst the staff were in the basement moving stock, they noticed a large number of droppings on the floor, that packaging protecting the stock had been gnawed through and that there was a strong unpleasant odour.
The staff immediately alerted the manager of what they had found in the storeroom. Mr P wasn’t sure whether the basement was infested with mice or rats, but knew he needed to have it investigated as the situation could escalate and the whole store could be affected. With the store about to open to the public, Mr P put in an urgent call to me to arrange a visit.
The Pest2Kill Solution:
We understood that it was likely that Mr P of Islington could have a rat infestation in his storeroom, and with the change in the weather it was obvious that they had sought shelter. It was imperative to attend the site as soon as possible, as an infestation of rats needs to be dealt with quickly to bring the situation under control. It was arranged with Mr P that we would attend the same morning of his initial call.
On arrival at the shop, it was immediately ascertained from the strong odour in the storeroom that it was a rat infestation. The storage racks and floor area were full of rat droppings and it was quickly established the rats were gaining entry through a gap in an air vent straight into the basement storeroom.
To resolve the rat infestation meant a two-pronged approach, firstly to bait the storeroom to eradicate any rats within the basement. Secondly to bait the showroom areas to ensure that the infestation was contained to the storeroom, so that no staff or customers of the bathroom shop were affected. The baiting of all areas was carried out that day and an appointment was made to return a few days later to check on progress.
On the initial return visit Mr P reported they had no issues within the showroom, but he had waited for us to check the storeroom. When we inspected the bait boxes in the storeroom, we found eight rats, which were removed from the property. The bait boxes were then re-baited, repaired the damaged air vent to ensure no further access could be gained and again we arranged to revisit a few days later. On our final visit we again checked the storeroom and was pleased to inform Mr P that no further rat activity was found, and the infestation had been bought under control.
